Follow Chirtoca Alexandru's journey from grappling with market challenges to harnessing the true potential of Pixofarm's Bin Scan app. Explore how this digital marvel brings precision and accuracy to fruit storage, revolutionizing the way fresh apples are sorted and delivered to meet the highest buyer demands

Chirtoca Alexandru, a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the field of fruit storage and consultancy services, stumbled upon Pixofarm's digital applications designed for orchard management. Among them, the Bin Scan application caught his attention, and he eagerly installed and tested it, recognizing its potential to address a critical challenge in the market of fresh apples.

I was pleasantly surprised to know the digital applications of Pixofarm company for the management of the fruit in the orchard, but a great interest I had for the Bin Scan application, and probably I was one of the most impatient, who installed it and I tested it recently.

"It is very well known about the fierce competition in the market of fresh apples, the demands of buyers have become very high. Now, when an offer is requested, in addition to the price, many other characteristics of the fruit are required – firmness, brix level, the degree of coloration and the caliber of apples in details – how many percentages are the apples with a diameter of 65-70mm, how many are with caliber 75-80mm and so on. And if for determining the firmness and grade of BRIX we already have tools, for pre-classification by diameter to sorting there was no solution. That's why the Bin Scan application seemed to me a solution to solve this problem. Immediately after installing the application we also tested it at a customer, who had a request to deliver Golden Delicious apples with 70+ caliber, firmness 7.5kg/cm2, BRIX 12% and green-yellow color. After performing the instrumental analyzes we made the measurements with the help of the Bin Scan application. The results were as follows:

  • Apple caliber 60-65 mm - 10%
  • Apple caliber 65-70 mm - 20%
  • Apple caliber 70-75 mm - 55%
  • Apples caliber 75-80 mm - 10%
  • Apples caliber 80+ mm - 5%

The customer was taken aback to find that the apple caliber was lower than expected, but he heeded Chirtoca's advice and refrained from making the delivery based on the initial forecasts. Later, when faced with another delivery with requirements for 65+ apples, and a 10% allowance for apples below 65mm, he passed them through the sorting line. The results reaffirmed the accuracy of the forecast made by the Bin Scan application.

"The customer was unpleasantly surprised, that he has apples with the caliber lower, than expected, but he did not risk making the delivery, based on my forecasts. Later, when he had a delivery with 65+ apple requirements, with 10% of permissible apples less than 65mm, he passed them through the sorting line and convinced himself that the forecast was truthful. In this way he convinced himself in the efficiency of the application, which allowed him not to take wrong steps and to receive calculated decisions before making offers or deliveries."

Witnessing the efficiency of the application, the customer gained confidence in its capabilities to help make calculated decisions before offering or making deliveries. Chirtoca, too, became convinced that the Bin Scan application would become an indispensable tool in appraising the commercial quality of apples. It would empower customers to accurately assess the quality of stored apples and make informed decisions about pricing and other commercial aspects.

"I also convinced myself that the Bin Scan application will become an extremely useful tool in appreciating the commercial quality of apples, which will offer customers to correctly appreciate the quality of stored apples and be able to make the right decisions about price and other commercial aspects."

Pixofarm's Bin Scan application proved to be a game-changer, bridging the gap in pre-classification by diameter and providing invaluable insights to fruit storage professionals like Chirtoca Alexandru. As the industry becomes increasingly competitive, the application emerges as a reliable ally, offering data-driven precision to ensure optimal decision-making and enhance the overall quality of fresh apple distribution.
